Becker School Welcomes Special Visit from MP Iqbal Mohammed

We had a very exciting day here at Becker School when we welcomed a special guest –  Iqbal Mohammed, MP for Dewsbury and Batley

As part of our ongoing work to make our school community safer, especially on Ruby Street, our children and staff wanted to share their concerns about speeding cars outside our school. Many of our pupils have special educational needs and may be non-verbal or have communication difficulties, so we came up with a creative way to get their voices heard.

The children recorded special messages like “Welcome to Becker School” and “Help keep us safe” which we played for our visitor. They also created beautiful finger-painted traffic lights to express their feelings about road safety.

Our Headteacher, Miss Pennington, explained,

“We wanted our children to feel relaxed and able to communicate in their own way, so we used art and sound. The children loved hearing their voices played back, there was so much laughter and enjoyment”.

Some children even invited MP Iqbal to record his own message, which he happily did!

During his visit, MP Iqbal didn’t just observe, he joined in with the learning in every classroom and really connected with our pupils. It was a wonderful experience for everyone.

“Iqbal was amazing with our children, stopping at each of our classrooms where he didn’t just observe but fully immersed himself in the children’s learning. The children loved having such a special guest.”

Mr. Iqbal Mohammed said:

“Visiting Becker School was a pleasure and deeply inspiring. The dedication of the staff and the resilience of the students reflect the very best of our community. I will continue to advocate for support for special educational needs children both locally and nationally.”

Following his visit, we’re hopeful for some positive changes — including speed signs, traffic calming measures, and an updated school sign for Ruby Street.

Thank you, MP Iqbal, for such a memorable visit!
